New College student Fred E. Carriles, who is focusing on religious and gender studies, has received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship from the federal State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Carriles will use the scholarship to study at The Hague university in the Netherlands this fall and plans to join the university’s student-led lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender group. Carriles is the 14th New College student to receive the Gilman Scholarship since 2004.
